The Institute of Meteorology has modern classrooms for teaching. Besides a lecture hall and seminar rooms for lectures and seminars, we offer our students seminar rooms for studying and individual work.

Vilhelm Bjerknes (1862 – 1951)

Vilhelm Bjerknes established an exact mathematical-physical basis for the quantitative description of the dynamics of the atmosphere and thus set the foundations for modern numerical weather forecasting.
After holding professorships at the universities of Stockholm (Sweden) and Kristiania (Norway), Vilhelm Bjerknes was appointed to the University of Leipzig. He was the first director of the Geophysical Institute, founded on 1 January 1913 - the first institute for atmospheric physics in Germany.
One focus of his research in Leipzig was the development of the synoptic visualisation of atmospheric conditions.
As a result of the First World War, Bjerknes returned to Norway in 1917, where he founded the Bergen School with the polar front theory, which was based on his work in Leipzig.
