Orientation

The first step towards a doctorate is finding a topic and a supervisor. Doctorates can be taken in all subjects offered at our university. You can either apply for advertised doctoral positions or a place in a structured doctoral programme, or alternatively look for a source of funding yourself and contact a suitable supervisor with your doctoral project.

Funding a doctorate

As a doctoral candidates you can be employed at the Leipzig Institute for Meteorology. Unlike scholarships, employment is a means of accumulating social security entitlements.

The University awards positions for doctoral candidates usually twice annually. Successful applicants are employed as research assistants at Leipzig University. This financial support is available for a maximum of three years.

The doctoral programmes offered by the Research Academy Leipzig offer doctoral students positions or scholarships to begin a structured doctorate. Applications are made directly to the individual programmes, which decide on the application and admission procedures.

Leipzig University, the Free State of Saxony and numerous organisations for the promotion of young talent all award scholarships to doctoral researchers. Most applicants need to demonstrate an above-average degree and pass a formal selection process. This usually begins with a project outline, which is often reviewed by two professors. The application procedure takes at least six months.

The doctoral seminar is a series of events organised by the Institute of Meteorology in cooperation with the Institute for Tropospheric Research.

Doctoral students and researchers from both institutions can discuss their dissertations at the doctoral seminar.

To PhD talks

The doctoral student representation is a self-representation body of all doctorates at the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences at the University of Leipzig. It provides networking, organisation and advice for all doctoral students in the faculty and in the associated institutes.
An elected member of the body participates in the meetings of the Faculty Council in an advisory role. One member is also represented in the commission for the revision of the doctoral regulations.

Doctorate at the Faculty of Physics and Geowissenschaften

Currently, about 240 doctoral students, a quarter of them from foreign countries, are pursuing a doctorate at the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences.

They manage the majority of the overall research work in the institutes and departments.

  • The institution responsible for the PhD ex-amination procedure is the Faculty Council.
  • PhD examination procedures are usually conducted by the doctoral commission.
  • Doctoral degree regulations determine process specifics.

At our faculty you can pursue a doctorate in the field of meteorology.

  • The degree Dr. rer. nat. is awarded for doctorates in the subject areas of meteorology.
  • The degree of Dr. rer. nat. or Dr. phil. can be awarded for doctorates in the subject areas of the history of natural sciences (physics, meteorology, geosciences, geography).
  • You can be admitted as a Doctoral candidate if you have obtained a Diplom, Master's or Magister degree at a higher education institution or the state examination and have not previously definitively failed a similar doctoral procedure.
  • The doctoral committee decides on the recognition of the equivalence of foreign examinations and degrees.
    Master's degrees or diploma degrees obtained in the member states of the European Union are generally treated as equivalent to the corresponding German degrees.

Preparing, carrying out and completing a doctorate may raise various questions. Due to the high degree of specialisation and variation between disciplines, it is not possible to offer doctoral candidates a centralised advisory service. Instead, at Leipzig University we support doctoral candidates with individual advisory services. If you are considering pursuing a doctorate, it would be wise to find out beforehand about the extensive range of research opportunities on offer. This will require consultation with supervising professors on the subject of your doctorate.

    soon as possible after enrolment at the University. Ideally you’ll already have written confirmation of acceptance to the doctoral candidate list when you first apply to the University or enrol.

Pre-Doc Award

With the Pre-Doc Award, we at Leipzig University support graduates in preparation for doctoral research as well as postdocs in their ability to supervise doctoral candidates. During the funding period, recipients shall jointly develop a doctoral research project and acquire funding for it.
