In the English-language master’s course International Physics Studies Program (IPSP) that is focussed on research, you will acquire in-depth specialised training in modern areas of experimental or theoretical physics. In physics elective courses you can specialise in a topical area of modern physics. The programme is research-oriented, and you complete the programme with an independent research thesis, the 23-week master’s thesis.

Requirements
- A completed bachelor’s degree in physics with a total of 240 ECTS credit points.
- If the applicant has successfully completed a degree programme in a subject other than physics, the admission commission of the faculty decides on admission to the master's course International Physics Studies Program (IPSP). Admission is possible if the previous degree is related or similar in content to the Physics degree programme.
- Sound knowledge in experimental physics in the subject areas “Solid State Physics” and “Soft Matter Physics” as well as in theoretical physics in the subject areas “Quantum Mechanics” and “Statistical Physics” with a minimum of five credit points each.
- Knowledge of English at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (or equivalent).
The faculty will check whether the above requirements have been met and then issue an official notification. This serves as proof that the candidate meets the relevant admission requirements.
Contents
The Master’s course International Physics Studies Program aims to convey comprehensive, advanced knowledge in the primary disciplines of physics with an in-depth education in sub-disciplines of physics research. You will learn to work independently and scientifically on problems from current physics research using interdisciplinary approaches while keeping in mind the responsibilities of science. You will also learn to present your results in a logical way.
In the programme, you can choose to specialise in one of the topics of experimental physics such as soft-matter or solid-state physics, in theoretical and mathematical physics or in applied physics. To this end, the Peter-Debye Institute for Soft Matter Physics, the Felix-Bloch-Institute for Solid State Physics, the Institute of Theoretical Physics as well as the external Leibniz-Institute of Surface Modification offer a wide variety of modules and research topics.
Das Masterstudium IPSP hat einen Umfang von 60 Leistungspunkten (LP) und ist in zwei Phasen gegliedert: die Vertiefungsphase sowie die Forschungsphase.
In der fachlichen Vertiefungsphase entfallen 15 LP auf die vertiefende Spezialisierung im physikalischen Wahlpflichtbereich.
Die 45 LP umfassende Forschungsphase beinhaltet das Forschungspraktikum im Umfang von 15 LP zur der Aufbereitung eines Forschungsfeldes und die darauf aufbauende Masterarbeit und deren Verteidigung im Umfang von 30 LP.

- chemical industry,
- informatics and communication technology.
Due to their analytical research skills and ability to develop problem-solving strategies, physicists often find employment outside of these traditional career fields.
