Doctorate at the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences


Currently, about 240 doctoral candidates, among them almost a quarter from abroad, are pursuing a doctorate at the faculty and cooperating institutes. They perform the major part of the scientific work in 26 departments of the institutes of physics, meteorology, geography, geophysics and geology as well as in 6 external research institutions.

For the possibility of structured doctoral studies there are 23 graduate classes, 14 of them with a background in mathematics/natural sciences, available at the university under the umbrella of the Research Academy Leipzig.

The doctoral candidates are funded by the university, third-party projects and selected funding within graduate schools.

PhD Representation of the Faculty

The PhD representation is a self-dependent panel of a group of members of the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences at Leipzig University. It serves for networking, organization and offering help to all doctoral candidates of the faculty and in the associated institutes.
An elected member of the representation takes part in the faculty council meetings in an advisory capacity. A member of the PhD representation is also represented in the commission for the revision of the PhD regulations.
